What to expect

Before commencing massage, the therapist will ask about any relevant injuries or medical conditions. You lie on a massage table covered with towels and blankets for privacy and warmth. Massage oil used may have specifically indicated aromatic essential oils added to them.

Excellent client-therapist communication is encouraged to obtain the best massage experience. Inform your therapist of tense or painful areas. Also communicate about your specific preferences in terms of depth of pressure. Otherwise, tune into your body sensations, feel the movement of energy, and focus on calm breathing patterns to get the most out of your treatment.

Common strokes in Swedish massage and what they involve

Effleurage

The beginning and end of a massage involves warm-up and cool-down techniques, using gentle gliding and circular strokes called effleurage. There are 3 levels based on amount of pressure applied; feather stroking, superficial eff and deeper effleurgage and is dependant on your specific needs and wants.

Petrissage

A technique that includes a kneading, wringing, rolling and lifting  movements, to deeply penetrate the muscles. Often, the feeling is of a rhythmic compression of your soft tissues. Blood circulation to the area is improved, which can relieve pain and help you feel renewed.

Friction

This technique involves rubbing on the massage area using the thumbs or fingers. The massage therapist may apply pressure in a circular area or linear, and this rubbing can soften and realign your muscles. This technique is great for those of you who may have joint pain or struggle to move your joints.

Tapotement

Drumming or tapping is what tapotement refers to. The massage therapist uses rhythmic tapping to stimulate blood flow across the body. Tapotement involves actions like hammering, slapping, cupping, hacking, and tapping. Tapotement promotes the production of endorphins, which help the body relax. This technique relaxes tight muscles and helps in lymphatic drainage.

Sound vibration/ physical vibration

This technique involves rhythmic shaking of the area being massaged. This will loosen up your body and help your muscles relax. Palms are used to shake the skin and muscles on your back. Fingers will massage areas that are small or sensitive, like your face. Vibration works best for soothing nerves in areas with large scars or knots.
